Getting into open-source intelligence
No background needed and nothing to buy. This is the order we would teach it in, with the habits first and the tools much later.
The path
Know what the work is
Open-source intelligence is analysis of information anyone can lawfully access. It is not hacking or pretexting, and it is not whatever a browser extension does on its own. Getting that straight early saves you from collecting unlawfully, and from producing something worthless.
Learn to record what you did
Before you touch a tool, keep a contemporaneous record of where something came from, when you collected it and what it looked like. Without it, a finding is only an assertion. Keeping that record is the habit employers here care most about.
Start with the primary sources
Registers, filings, court records and regulators. Slower than a search engine and far more reliable. Our directory starts with the Crown Dependencies records, because they are poorly documented elsewhere.
Practise on something real but harmless
Pick a listed company, a vessel or a piece of land and trace what you can from public records alone. Write it up as if someone will check it. Then have someone check it.
Come to a session
Most people learn fastest by watching someone more experienced work through a problem and asking why. Events are free, and you do not need to be a member for your first one.
